Distribution, ecology and habitat:
Southeast Pacific Ocean, Juan Fernandez Islands and off the coast of Victoria, in southern Australian waters. Bathydemersal on the continental slope at depths of 1600 - 2515 m.

To at least 16 cm.

Head and snout moderate; head without modified scales forming stout ridges; a few small, deciduous scales on suborbital and lower jaw; snout naked ventrally and along anterior part of dorsal surface. Upper jaw teeth in 2 series, lower jaw teeth in a single row; chin barbel short, thin. Outer gill rakers of first arch short, flap like. Body scales deciduous, spinules exposed field reduced or lacking. Leading edge of long spinous ray of first dorsal fin with numerous short, reclined spinules; outer pelvic-fin ray slightly elongate.
Colour:
In preservative - overall dark brownish, somewhat darker on head; blackish over operculum, gill membranes and jaws; fins dark.
