Distribution, ecology and habitat:
Temperate Southwest Pacific off Australia and New Zealand; bathydemersal on continental slope at 500-900 m; rarely taken off Australian mainland, more common on ridges and seamounts in Tasman Sea.
Size:
To 64 cm TL.

Snout extremely long, narrow, about one-half headlength, tipped with a broad flat diamond-shaped scute, anterolateral margins completely supported by bone. Underside of head covered with small, spinulated scales. Nasal fossa mostly covered with small scales. Body scales with 5-8 divergent rows of broad-based spinules. Light organ small, externally visible with black dermal window before anus.
Colour:
Overall brownish without distinctive markings; darker dorsally, abdomen and gill covers blackish; lips, gums, mouth lining, median ridge of nasal bone dark; first dorsal fin blackish, other fins pale to dusky.
