"Sea Monster" sightings

Earlier this year, Mike Kanzler, of Isla San Marco Sportfishing, noticed two "mysterious shapes" swimming towards the shallows near West Light House Point, Isla San Marcos B.S.C. Mexico. A closer look showed them to be Oarfish, Regalecus glesne, both more than 6 or 7 metres long. Sadly, despite Michael's rescue efforts, both oarfishes beached themselves on the rocky shore.

These beautiful ribbon-like fishes are thought to have been responsible for many historic "sea serpent" sightings, as they reportedly reach lengths of up to 17 metres. Oarfishes usually live in the deep ocean midwaters and many records are based on sightings at the surface, or strandings in the shore, usually after storms.
